Salford Born
Salford City Council approached Walkabout to help devise and deliver a specific project for the Muslim communities of Salford. Walkabout’s approach to working with the communities was to forge strong links and lines of communication, supported by an inclusive steering group set up in partnership with Salford City Council.
The Lowry in partnership with Salford City Council, The Mosque Committee, Greater Manchester Police and the Muslim communities of Salford, worked to develop and deliver creative projects that would raise the profile and awareness of Muslim communities within the city.
As with all Walkabout projects the creative elements came from the local communities involved and these included:
- Song production
- Photograph and video production skills
- Textiles
- Islamic calligraphy
- Traditional dance and street dance
The work was delivered across the Muslim communities of Salford and engaged men and women of all ages. The final showcase was performed to a sold out audience at The Lowry in June 2008.
